  • Sontronics Halo Recording Microphones

    Sontronics HALO is a striking-looking dynamic microphone designed for use on guitar amps and cabinets. The HALO has a dynamic capsule suspended on four spring mounts within a circular frame that protects the microphone from vibrations and rumble on stage or in the studio.

    HALO is based on the Sontronics STC-80, a handheld dynamic microphone that gives stunning results on vocals, but which has also been increasingly used to great effect on guitar amps for live and studio work.   • Sontronics Corona Recording Microphones

     

    With a look reminiscent of the Shure 5B double-button carbon microphone from the 1930s, the Corona takes its name from the Mexican beer of the same name. No, it doesn’t . . . Yes, it does . . . No . . . Okay, it does. Not. Actually, the name derives from the outermost ring around the sun, which is marvelously appropriate, since the body of the Corona is concentrically spring-suspended inside a circular outer ring—and to use the obvious cliché, it will shine brightly on your vocals, live or in the studio. The inspiration for the Corona came from Sontronics’ own Halo, a dynamic mic designed for guitar tracking, that found itself in front of singers as well as guitar cabinets, according to user feedback. Since the Halo was not designed for vocals, Sontronics founder Trevor Coley set about the task of making a similar mic that was—and the Corona dynamic vocal mic was born. The Corona takes the essence of the Halo and redesigns it specifically for voice, with built-in pop filtering for plosives, and a ported capsule to capture more of the low frequencies for a thicker, richer, and more rounded sound.

    The M 150 Tube Microphone from Neumann is a modified omnidirectional, condenser tube microphone designed for vocal and general instrument recording in the studio. Designed after the classic M 50 tube microphone, the M 150 incorporates many of the features in a modern microphone.

    The M 150 features a transformer less tube amplifier based on the M 149. This results in warm transparent audio signal character with a very low noise floor.

    The titanium diaphragm of the pressure capsule is 12mm in diameter and is exceedingly thin. As requested by top engineers, the head-grille is shaped just like that on the original M 50.

  • Neumann M 149 Switchable Tube Microphone

    The M 149 Switchable Tube Microphone from Neumann is a variable dual-diaphragm microphone. The K 49 capsule, well known from the legendary U 47 and M 49 microphones, is followed by a tube functioning as an impedance converter. In contrast to earlier concepts utilizing a transformer, the tube is complemented with a transformerless output circuit design. The M 149 Tube can thus feed long microphone cables without any coloration.

    Two slide switches are located below the large, acoustically open headgrille. The switch at the front allows selection one of nine directional patterns. The slide switch at the rear operates a seven-step high pass filter, allowing very fine adjustment of the cut-off frequency.

  • Neumann U 89 i Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone – Nickel

    The nickel U 89 i Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone from Neumann is a studio microphone for multiple applications. The head grille protects a dual-diaphragm capsule and a rotary switch below the head grille selects from five different polar patterns.

    The amplifier accepts sound pressure levels up to 134 dB without distortion. This figure can be increased to 140 dB. An additional rotary switch activates a filter that changes the low frequency response either below 80 Hz or 160 Hz frequency.

    This microphone has omnidirectional, cardioid, figure-8, hypercardioid, and wide-angle cardioid characteristics. When compared to the standard cardioid pattern, the hypercardioid characteristic suppresses sound from the side more efficiently. The wide-angle polar pattern is especially useful to record large sound sources.

     

  • Neumann U 47 fet Collector’s Edition Condenser Microphone

    Built according to the original production documents and schematics of the classic design, the U 47 fet Collector’s Edition Condenser Microphone from Neumann is a re-release of this often-copied microphone. A transistorized version of their tube U 47, the U 47 fet features their classic K 47 capsule and boasts a high SPL handling, and has historically found itself at home outside of a kick drum and in front of loud guitar and bass amps, contributing greatly to recordings from the 1960s and 70s. Like the original, there is a slight boost in frequency response around 2 kHz.

    The mic features the same low-cut filter as the original at 140 Hz, as well as the selectable -10 dB pad. For additional attenuation, there is a -6 dB output switch, allowing you to hit your mic preamps at a lower level.

    The U 87 Ai is addressed from the front. The frequency response of the cardioid and figure-8 directional characteristics are very flat for frontal sound incidence, even in the upper frequency range. The microphone can be used very close to a sound source without the sound becoming unnaturally harsh. By means of a high-pass filter, interference through subsonic and low frequencies are reduced.

    The nickel TLM 103 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone from Neumann is a cardioid microphone that features low self-noise and high sound pressure level transmission. The capsule, derived from that used in the Neumann U 87, has a cardioid pattern, is acoustically well-balanced, and provides great attenuation of signals from the rear.

    The TLM 103 is equipped with a large-diaphragm capsule with a cardioid pattern. By focusing on this pattern, the attenuation of unwanted rear sound has been optimized. Off-axis sounds are rendered naturally while isolation is increased. This also leads to a high feedback suppression when the microphone is used in live situations or where loudspeaker playback is a factor.

    The TLM 103 is addressed from the side. The mic’s large-diaphragm capsule is based on the K 87 and has a flat frequency response up to about 5 kHz, and above that, a wide flat 4 dB presence boost.

    The large, wire mesh head-grille protects the capsule from plosive sounds and effectively prevents pop noises. These characteristics are achieved without resorting to corrective resonance effects. The microphone maintains a great impulse response and reproduces details of music and speech without coloration.
